Save the Dates for the 2023 ABA AI and Robotics National Institute

On October 9-10, 2023, I will once again lead the American Bar Association Artificial Intelligence and Robotics National Institute. This year’s Institute will be the fifth annual version of the program. Please save the dates and make plans to come to Santa Clara, California. The Institute will take place in the beautiful Santa Clara Law School building. We have an exciting and fascinating agenda for attendees this year, which will be the fifth annual program. For those of you who don’t know, the Institute is a two-day continuing education program each October featuring the latest trends and hot topics in artificial intelligence and robotics. The program offers ten hours of continuing legal education credits and will include four fascinating keynote talks.

With the introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, the media are full of stories about AI. Over a hundred million users have tried it. People are also experimenting with systems creating images and videos with text prompts. Simply put, generative AI has taken the world by storm. Accordingly, all the panels of this year’s Institute will include at least some coverage of generative AI. Our program will also cover developments in robotics and drones.

This week, the program committee for the Institute and I finalized an agenda for the program. More detail to come, but here is a taste of what we will present this year. Topics for the Institute this year are:

  • An introduction to the technology and legal issues associated with generative artificial intelligence and large language models.

  • A program on the emerging legislation, regulations, and standards governing AI.

  • A session on protecting the privacy and security of data in a world infused with AI.

  • A roundtable on Issues involved with the use of AI in the workplace in the generative AI era.

  • A panel covering legal issues arising from the many uses of air, land, sea, and underwater drones and advances in robotics.

  • A discussion of how generative AI is disrupting the entertainment field and associated legal issues.

  • A deep dive into the dangers of AI disinformation, including on social media and the risks of deepfakes.

  • An exploration of how AI and robotics and impacting life sciences research and medicine.

  • A review of how lawyers and law firms can use generative AI in the practice of law consistent with the rules of professional conduct.

  • A visionary future-looking panel on the possibility that AI systems will achieve sentience and how the law should respond to such an event.

I invite you to join me, the program committee, and the American Bar Association Science & Technology Law Section at October’s program. More information and registration information will be available at the Institute’s webpage shortly. In the meantime, please save the dates and contact me if you want to ask questions about what this year’s Institute has to offer or to follow up.
