ABA Artificial Intelligence and Robotics National Institute to Address Risks to Humanity from Superintelligent AI

I am excited once again to lead the American Bar Association Artificial Intelligence and Robotics National Institute on October 12-13, 2026 at Santa Clara Law School. With the recent alarmed announcements from AI researchers, technology leaders, AI vendor CEOs, and even U.S. Presidents, we are going through an unprecedented era of fears about superinteligent AI dangers. Managing the risks of artificial superintelligence (ASI) will be a recurring these throughout the two-day program, culminating in my panel entitled, “‘I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I don’t want to do that.’ Law, Policy, and Ethics of Uncooperative, Uncontrollable, and Downright Dangerous AI in Coming Decades.” The panel will discuss what is really going on in AI research, what AI agent misbehavior is actually occurring, the ethical dilemmas faced by companies and nations about slowing down the development of superintelligent AI, and the legal and policy responses to the challenge of superintelligent AI.
